Exploring Systemic Thinking for Joyful Coexistence
Welcome!
This group will meet for four Mondays at noon ET (9 am PT): November 17, skipping one week for the Thanksgiving holiday, and resuming December 1, 8, and 15.
Below you will find an explanatory welcome video, a description of topics, and a library of resources.
The Zoom link is here.
Session One
The Local Self
Humans are far more sensitive and aware than most people believe. We are impacted by our neighbor’s emotions, we carry the weight of past traumas with us, and we respond instantaneously to our environment. We are all connected and yet we are, at the same, responsible only for our own body and our own response. In this session, we will start exploring limitlessness by identifying our “local self” so that we have a home base to come back to as we move out to examine the systems around us.
Session Two
Limits
In order to be intentional about fostering connections, we need to be aware of where we place limits. This session will be dedicated to exploring cultural norms and concepts that reinforce the idea of separation between people and between us and our environment. This might include ideas like: what is in the past stays in the past; we can will ourselves to not feel the emotions of others; or we are unaffected by our environment. What limitations would you like to reconsider?
Session Three
Systemic Thinking
In our modern Western world, we tend to think about things in a linear fashion. 1 + 1 = 2. But it’s more accurate to understand influencing factors as multiple and to see ourselves as threads within an already existent tapestry. Within this tapestry, there are parts that can be rewoven, added to, unraveled, and extended, but we are never creating entirely from scratch. This session is dedicated to intentionally working with relationships and seeing multiple influencing factors.
Session Four
What are your unique talents for relationship building?
After spending three sessions focusing on our place within the vast networks around us, we will spend our last session focused on what is in our power to change. Participants will be asked to share the unique talents they have discovered about working systemically and identify goals for moving forward.
Our Library of Resources
Martin Luther King, Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail
“I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial ‘outside agitator’ idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.”
Tara Brach
“The more we trust our shared belonging, the more our lives become love in action.”
